50 men in court for a woman's rape
In France, 50 men are in court because they are said to have raped a woman named Gisèle. Her husband, Dominique, gave her drugs to sleep and then let these men come to their house. The men are different: some are young, some are old, some work as firefighters, and others have different jobs. They all could go to jail for many years if the court says they are guilty.
The trial started in September and is almost finished. The men have to answer questions from the judges. They say they did not know that Gisèle could not say yes or no because she was asleep from the drugs. The court has many videos that show what happened because Dominique filmed it. Dominique says he is guilty and that the other men are too.
Some men say they did not understand what they were doing. They say Dominique tricked them. They thought Gisèle wanted to have sex. But Dominique told the men how to not wake up his wife. He said they should not smell like smoke or perfume. The court is trying to decide if the men knew what they were doing was wrong. Gisèle's lawyers say the men could have told the police, but they did not.
