A big earthquake happened in Myanmar. It killed more than 1,600 people. Many buildings fell down. The earthquake was very strong and even affected places far away like Thailand and China.

The earthquake happened because the earth's plates moved. Myanmar is on top of four plates. These plates move and sometimes get stuck. When they move again, it causes an earthquake. This earthquake was very shallow, so it shook the ground a lot.

In Bangkok, a building fell down because of the earthquake. The ground in Bangkok is soft, which made the shaking worse. Some buildings in Bangkok are not strong enough for earthquakes. This is because they were built before there were rules for making buildings safe from earthquakes.
